Ron Howard announced that the first installment in The Dark Tower trilogy will be in theaters on May 17, 2013. Even more interesting is information about a television series that will be a bridge between the big screen installments. As far as I can remember this hasn’t been done to this extent and planning before. I believe Star Trek had some theater/television crossover moments with the Borg Queen but nothing compared to what Ron Howard seems to have planned.
