I am confused about the X-Men franchise and what it is exactly trying to achieve. The article below discusses X-Men: First Class which is a prequel. We get a mention of a possible X-Men 4 sequel. It is also mentioned that Jackman may be trying to persuade Singer to join him on the X-Men: Wolverine 2 spinoffquel. Looks to me like producer Lauren Shuler Donner has no idea where to focus the franchise.
There is a common technique in television to jump on the latest flavor of the month. Whether it is the millionaire quiz shows of the 90’s or the reality shows of the 00’s. The purpose is two-fold. First, capitalize on the latest trend and strike while it is hot. Second, to create burnout of the product by watering down the competition’s product. Donner seems be doing the latter to her own franshise. Can any non-comic geek (a.k.a. main stream audience) really grasp where this series is at? We are dealing with a prequel, a sequel and a sequel to a spinoffquel in this one article!
X-Men is one absolute craptastic franchise and Singer seems to be calling all the shots, not Donner. Judging from the poor reception to the non-Singer X-Men 3 it looks like he is holding all the cards as well. In summary, Singer wants to do the prequel, Jackman wants Singer to do the spinoffquel and Donner wants Singer to do the sequel. Just craptastic!
